Post-Transplant Hair Care: Do’s and Don’ts for Faster Recovery
Share
A successful hair transplant doesn’t end when the procedure is over — in fact, the healing process is just as important as the surgery itself. Following the right aftercare routine will help ensure your new grafts grow in strong, healthy, and permanent.
At HuanMDClinic, we’ve guided hundreds of patients through the post-op journey. Here's your go-to guide for what you should and shouldn’t do to speed up recovery and protect your results.
🟢 DO: Follow These Recovery Best Practices
1. Sleep Smart
For the first 10 days, sleep with your head elevated at a 45-degree angle using a neck pillow. Always lie on your back, never your side or stomach. This prevents graft displacement and reduces swelling.
2. Keep the Area Moist
Hydration is key. Keep the recipient area moist for at least 7 days to prevent dryness and itching. Use only the saline spray or healing lotion provided by your clinic.
3. Change Your Pillowcase Daily
Use clean, fragrance-free pillowcases and linens every night for 10 days to minimize infection risk.
4. Use Ice Packs (the Right Way)
Apply cold compresses to your forehead only (never on the graft area) during the first 5 days to minimize swelling. Keep it 2–3 cm away from the hairline.
5. Eat Nutritious Foods
Fuel your recovery with a healthy diet rich in vitamins and protein. This supports new follicle growth and boosts healing. Maintain this habit for at least 5 months post-surgery.
6. Be Gentle When Washing
Your clinic will advise when to start gentle washing (usually after Day 2–3). Use lukewarm water, pat dry gently, and avoid any rubbing or pressure.
🔴 DON’T: Avoid These Common Mistakes
1. Don’t Touch the Transplanted Area
Avoid touching, rubbing, or scratching the recipient area for at least 2 weeks. Grafts are still settling and can easily be dislodged.
2. No Alcohol or Smoking
Avoid alcohol for 5 days and smoking for at least 1 week post-op. Both slow down circulation, delay healing, and can interfere with graft survival.
3. No Sweating or Exercise
Avoid intense workouts, sweating, and heat exposure for 1 month. Even activities like football, weightlifting, or using a sauna can disturb the grafts. Walking is okay after Day 4.
4. No Sun or Swimming
Stay out of direct sunlight for 2 months and avoid swimming (both pool and ocean) for 1 month to prevent infection and UV damage to healing tissue.
5. Don’t Wear Hats or Helmets
Protect your new grafts by avoiding any headwear that presses on the scalp for 1 full month. This includes hats, beanies, helmets, or tight caps.
6. No Haircuts or Hair Dye Too Soon
Do not dye your hair for at least 4–6 months post-op. Scissor haircuts are okay after 1 month, but razors should not be used until 4 months in.
7. Avoid Bumping or Sudden Movements
For 2 months, be cautious when entering vehicles, bending over, or moving your head quickly. Even minor trauma can damage the grafts.
Bonus Tips from Our Doctors
- Avoid coughing or sneezing too hard during the first 2 weeks — keep your head steady to avoid sudden pressure changes.
- Itching is normal, especially in the first 14 days. Do not scratch. Gently tap the area or ask your doctor for a soothing spray.
- Don’t panic if shedding occurs in the first month. Shock loss is expected. New hair will regrow from the root.
